Achieving Flight

Picture of the Week: Achieving Flight

The week was slipping by with no photo worth sending. Tonight mother nature pulled through and presented this gift. The birds are Brown Pelicans, soon to leave the area for warmer waters down south.

I have more photos of pretty sunsets than you can imagine. This photo reminds me that for a picture to stand out, it must operate on a number of levels all at once. The sunset provides the light that is crucial to any photograph. The clouds show unusual forms. The birds (if you can identify them) add a sense of place, and they also define an instant in time, which is what that shutter click is all about.

For some unknown (to me) reason, when I put this photo in the e-mail, it first looked very washed out, not at all like it looked in Photoshop. I had to return to Photoshop to make adjustments for proofing on an RGB Monitor. So, I hope it comes out looking good for you, and not all washed out or too dark or all purple or something weird like that.

The photo is also on my web site, for comparison if you are interested. I think it looks better on the web.

PS. In last week's photo commentary, Trying to Fly, I had misidentified the animals. They are Sea Lions, not Harbor Seals. Thank you Carlisle.
